Parrott: Real Madrid and Bale already feeling the heat
European football expert Chris Parrott says Real Madrid and Gareth Bale will now face a test of their mettle after they lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid on Saturday evening.
The former Tottenham winger has yet to taste victory since signing for a world record £85.3million.
And Parrott says the pressure is already on after the defeat at Santiago Bernabeu. He said: "When Real Madrid don’t win a game, it’s an enormous thing. I would expect Real Madrid and Gareth Bale will be fine but there’s suddenly early season pressure.
"Pressure does interesting things to any team and how they react to this will be very interesting." Parott also says Atleti's win means they should be considered title candidates.
"Gareth Bale was ten the last time Atletico won a Madrid derby in the league. If this didn’t confirm what we already knew, that Atletico are a serious team and potentially there will be a three way title race in Spain. "Suddenly (Diego) Simone’s team are real challengers."

Man Utd boss David Moyes has Champions League doubts
Manchester United boss David Moyes has questioned whether his side have the quality to win the Champions League.
"To win the Champions League, you need five or six world-class players," said Moyes, who took over the club in July.
"That's the level you have to be at to win it. We've not got that yet but what we have got is experience."
Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson, who retired at the end of last season following 26 years in charge at Old Trafford.Ferguson won 13 league titles, two Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four League Cups during his tenure.
He recommended fellow Scottish countryman Moyes to take over from him but his successor has endured a difficult start in the role.
United were beaten 2-1 by West Brom on Saturday and have lost three of their opening six Premier League games in defence of the title they won last season.
Boos accompanied the final whistle at Old Trafford after the defeat by the Baggies and United lie 12th in the league table ahead of their match in Ukraine.
However, football legend Johan Cruyff says Moyes needs time to come to terms with being Manchester United manager.
Cruyff was part of the Dutch team famed for its fluid pass-and-move style during the 1970s and the forward played for Ajax and Barcelona before going on to manage both teams.
"If you are going to succeed somebody who was very successful it takes some time," he told BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek programme.
Man Utd did not play well enough - Moyes
The 66-year-old guided Barcelona to four consecutive league titles and a European Cup during an eight-year spell in charge of the club.
He added: "It is not a question of your own way of doing things. It is a question that everybody expects you to do everything and win everything.
"They won a lot of things before and they didn't buy a lot of new players, which is an area where they could have done better.
"People always like to win and fans are the same everywhere so it's quite normal that they are like that."
Cristiano Ronaldo blames Real Madrid's players for Atletico loss

Cristiano Ronaldo has defended Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, saying the players have to be blamed for their 1-0
loss to Atletico.
"The manager has nothing to do with it. He is doing a great job. The fault is on the players, we are the ones that have to improve," he told Marca.
"I am happy with Ancelotti; he is one of the best coaches I have ever had."
Diego Costa's eighth league goal of the season was enough to inflict a first defeat on Ancelotti, who was
appointed manager at the Bernabeu in the summer.
Real had also dropped points earlier this month in a 2-2 draw with Villarreal, Bale's first game for the club, leaving them five points off the top of La Liga.
"We have to keep our heads up because the league is complicated," said Portuguese forward Ronaldo, 28.
"The good thing is that this loss has come early. I have a lot of hope for winning something important this year. I played poorly and so did my team-mates."
Meanwhile, Atletico manager Diego Simeone has urged his players not to get carried away by their perfect start to the season.
The former Argentina international midfielder, 43, said: "In a season, Barca and Real's financial and individual strength is bigger, we have to use our weapons and take it game by game.
"We have to keep calm, the season is very long, we cannot be over-confident."
Sunderland 1-3 Liverpool: Welcome return for Suarez as Reds beat Black Cats

Luis Suarez enjoyed a rapturous return to the Liverpool first-team as his brace helped the Reds to a 3-1 win over Sunderland in his first league appearance since April. It was a bustling encounter at the Stadium of Light, with both teams creating a host of decent chances, but the visitors' more clinical front pair of Suarez and Daniel Sturridge paid dividends. And it didn’t take long for the Uruguayan to show manager Brendan Rodgers what he’s been missing, with the 26-year-old testing the Sunderland defence as he twisted and turned to make room for himself before unleashing a fierce drive that fizzed just past the post in the opening exchanges. The Black Cats also threatened early on as midfielder Seb Larsson struck the bar with a trademark free-kick, but Liverpool looked to have the lead after nine minutes when Martin Skrtel had the ball in the back of the net, only for the defender’s goal to be ruled out for offside. Despite the home side’s best efforts, the in-form Sturridge put the visitors ahead in controversial circumstances on the half-hour mark, the England striker appearing to divert Steven Gerrard’s corner into the net with his upper arm. Sunderland fans were then further angered when the referee turned down protests after an apparent pass back from Kolo Toure to Simon Mignolet, who returned to the Stadium of Light for the first time since his £9million switch to Merseyside. But their jeers were silenced just minutes later when Suarez netted his first goal since returning from his ten-match domestic ban, slotting Sturridge’s pass home into an empty net after a sumptuous long ball from passmaster Gerrard. Liverpool looked vulnerable at the back in moments, while Liverpool’s makeshift right-back Kolo Toure found it difficult to keep tabs on Mackems winger Adam Johnson. The half-time scoreline was perhaps harsh on the Black Cats who performed well and kept plucking away at Liverpool’s back four, with Craig Gardner forcing Mignolet to save magnificently from point-blank range after a clever pass over the top from Lee Cattermole. And the home side started the better as the teams emerged for the second-half, with Johnson again going close with a low strike that drifted just wide and Emanuele Giaccherini pulling one back for the Wearside outfit seconds later, the Italian poking the ball home after Mignolet spilled Ki Sung-Yueng’s initial effort. Mignolet then redeemed himself as Sunderland pushed for an equaliser, the Belgian stopper doing extremely well to parry Gardner’s well hit long-range strike. Liverpool seem to be unable to maintain their dominance in matches at present, and the three points looked less and less likely for them after each Sunderland attack. There was that familiar lack of cohesion to Liverpool’s second-half performance, with wayward passes and poor control halting a lot of their forward moves, as interim boss Kevin Ball’s men looked to pounce on their mistakes. But the hosts struggled to sustain their high tempo, and while Westwood came to his side’s rescue again with a fine save from piledriver from Toure, Suarez wrapped up the contest with his second a minute from time, sweeping the ball into another empty net following a swift counter-attack from the red men. Sunderland’s fourth consecutive defeat sees them remain rock-bottom of the top flight, while Liverpool rise to second - level on points with Tottenham -, with the emerging partnership of Suarez and Sturridge leaving the Anfield faithful hopeful of catching first-placed Arsenal.
Lionel Messi: Barcelona forward out injured for three weeks
Barcelona forward Lionel Messi will be sidelined for up to three weeks after pulling a right thigh muscle in the 2-0 win over Almeria on Saturday.
The injury to the world player of the year will rule him out of Tuesday's Champions League trip to Celtic.
Messi, 26, scored as Barca recorded a club-record seventh straight La Liga win at the start of the season.
It is the Argentine's second injury of the season after he missed an earlier game after bruising his left thigh.
He also missed several games at the end of last season with a right hamstring pull.
In addition to the Celtic match, he will also miss two Spanish league games against Valladolid and Osasuna.
Exclusive - Man United will pull though sticky transitional period, insists May
Former Manchester United defender David May has called for fans to be patient with David Moyes as he steers the club through a difficult period of transition.
The former Everton boss has overseen United’s worst league start in the Premier League era, in his first season since taking over from the great Sir Alex Ferguson.
On the back of winning a record 20th top-flight title, the Red Devils have already slumped to three defeats in their opening six games, while United fans have been left wanting following an unproductive summer transfer window.
But May, who was a key part of United’s famous 1998/99 treble winning team, insisted the club will come out of the other side of their recent woes, and adds that it's crucial that Moyes strengthens the squad over January.
“Teams are ahead of us now, Arsenal are eight points ahead and you cannot give the competing teams these points in hand,” the former full-back told Press Pass.
“But you have to bear with it. We’ve got a team of champions who know how to win things and they need to stick together and turn it around.
“They’ve got big players at United. Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick, all these players have got vast experience of being in this position, and it’s up to those lads to pull the rest of the team through.
“David Moyes might be saying something to the owners now. We went for Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara and Gareth Bale this summer, but they didn’t happen.
“Their summer dealings sent out the wrong message for fans, but we need to stick together and see it out to the New Year and hopefully get in a couple of players in the winter.”

Former Man United striker vows to snub Stoke's interest
Former Man United striker vows to snub Stoke's interest
Stoke's long-standing plans to sign former Manchester United striker Mame Biram Diouf have taken a hit.
Diouf is out of contract with Hannover in the summer and Stoke manager Mark Hughes tried to sign him in the transfer window.
The Senegal star, who had a poor time in England with United and Blackburn, has improved since moving to the Bundesliga.
Hughes is keen for more firepower up front and will try to land the 25-year-old in the winter.
However, as talkSPORT revealed recently, Hannover are eager to keep Diouf and will fight to keep hold of him.
And now the player himself is planning on holding renewal talks.
He said: "I'm under contract with the Hanover and I like to renew.
"Hannover is a nice place to live and signing with them was the best thing I have done in my career."
The other Torres Mourinho is desperate to sign for Chelsea
Jose Mourinho already has one Torres, but reports in Portugal say he’s after another. Namely, Atletico Madrid’s midfield sensation Oliver. talkSPORT's Transfer Spotlight has more on the youngster...
Name: Oliver Torres Muñoz
Date of birth: 10 November, 1994
Birthplace: Navalmoral de la Mata, Spain
Position: Central midfielder
Club: Atletico Madrid
International appearances: 3 (Spain U21)
Honours: UEFA European U19 Championship (2012), Copa del Rey (2012/13)
What's the latest?
Torres began to break into the Atleti first team last season, and there was much excitement among supporters surrounding a midfielder who promised to offer more creativity than more senior players in the side. Diego Simeone has opted for a gradual approach in an attempt to bed him in to the first team, meaning he has only made a few substitute appearances this season, so there is a chance that the youngster could get itchy feet. Portuguese paper Record say that Jose Mourinho rates him highly, and Chelsea could make an €8m offer in January. Atleti won’t be keen to sell however, having just tied him down to a new deal with a €24m buyout clause, and Chelsea’s cause could be further complicated by reports that Barcelona may have first refusal on him as part of the David Villa transfer.
Did you know?
1) Torres was a decorated youth player and was voted best player at several junior tournaments in his early years. At the age of 12, he was scouted by both FC Barcelona and Espanyol during a brief spell at a football camp in the Catalan capital, but would ultimately return to his native Extremadura to be close to his family.
2) In the end the midfielder wouldn't regret his decision, as at the age of 13 he passed a trial to join Atletico Madrid's academy. He quickly impressed onlookers with his skill and speed on the ball, and by the time he turned 17 he caught the eye of first team coach Diego Simeone.
3) On April 29, 2012, he made the Atletico first team squad for the first time ahead of their game with Real Betis. The youngster would have to wait until July 28 in a friendly against Alianza de Lima for a taste of first team action and his official debut followed on August 19, when he came on for striker Adrian against Levante.
4) The creative midfielder was involved in an unfortunate incident in August 2012 when he posted a picture of himself in the official Real Madrid shop at the Santiago Bernabeu on his Twitter. After Atletico supporters reacted unfavourably upon seeing one of their brightest young players seemingly shopping at the home of their biggest rivals, he took to Twitter to explain that he simply had to make an emergency stop there to buy some boots at the last minute, adding that supporters "shouldn't doubt that I'm an Atletico fan".
5) Unsurprisingly for a player of his promise, Torres has featured prominently at youth level for Spain, making his first steps for La Roja with their U16s. At the age of only 17, he won the UEFA European U19 Championship with Spain, becoming an undisputed started for his nation and playing in the final against Greece. He has recently become part of the U21 set-up.

Lionel Messi appears in Spanish court over tax fraud

Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi has appeared before a Spanish judge as part of a tax fraud investigation.
The 26-year-old Argentine, four times Fifa World Player of
the Year, and his father Jorge Messi are accused of defrauding the
authorities of more than 4m euros ($5.4m; £3.4m).The two men were questioned separately at the court in Gava, near Barcelona.
Both father and son deny the allegations. The Messis' lawyer said he wanted to resolve the matter.
The footballer and his father are suspected of using companies abroad - in Belize and Uruguay - to sell the rights to use Lionel Messi's image, thereby circumventing tax obligations in Spain. The allegations date back to 2007-9.
The income related to Mr Messi's image rights included contracts with Banco Sabadell, Danone, Adidas, Pepsi-Cola, Proctor and Gamble, and the Kuwait Food Company.
'Tougher line'
After Friday's hearing, which was a closed-court session, the state prosecutor's spokesman told the BBC that no agreement had been reached with the two men and their lawyers.
The spokesman said that the defence's strategy had been to pin blame on Jorge Messi, insisting on the innocence of the star striker.
In August, Jorge Messi made a payment of 5m euros to the tax authorities - the 4.16m euros of the alleged unpaid tax plus interest.
The BBC's Tom Burridge in Madrid says that Spanish tax authorities are taking a much tougher line on tax infringements due to the country's economic crisis, which is why they are continuing to pursue the case despite this payment.
Lionel Messi has previously stated that he and and his father "have never committed any infringement. We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations".
Lionel Messi's father Jorge (centre) and his son were questioned separately
Mr Messi's net salary from Barcelona is said to be about 16m euros a year, making him one of the world's most highly paid sportspeople.
He has also signed multi-million-dollar endorsements with commercial sponsors around the world.
Mr Messi's achievements on the field have made him one of the most marketable in the business.
He came from a modest background and has overcome a serious health issue, joining Barcelona as a 13-year-old in 2000 and making his first-team debut only three years later.
But the allegations are a big blow to the prestige of the player, who has long been seen as a more humble figure than most top-class footballers.
Jose Mourinho not my friend - Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has no regrets about the breakdown
of his friendship with former mentor and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.
"I don't lose any sleep," he said.
"We had a great personal and professional relationship before. We don't have that now."
Mourinho refused to be drawn on his relationship with Villas-Boas when pressed for a response by journalists on Friday.
Reacting to numerous requests to comment; he answered: "I've got nothing to say."
Villas-Boas opted to split from Mourinho - having
worked as a scout for him - after his Portuguese compatriot rejected his
plea to move to a more a senior role. He went on to enjoy success as manager of Porto, including winning the league title and Europa League in 2011, before following in Mourinho's footsteps to manage Chelsea between 2011 to 2012 and now Tottenham.
"Our break-up point was because I was full of ambition to give him something extra and I wanted further involvement from the job I was doing at that time," said Villas-Boas.
"I felt I could give him much more. But he didn't feel the need for somebody near to him or in another position as an assistant, and because of that it was decided that it was time, after Inter Milan, to continue our careers apart."
When asked if it would be fair to say that Villas-Boas no longer considers himself friends with Mourinho, he replied: "Yes, I think so. I don't think we need explanations. But our relationship has broken down.
"I think we have the mutual respect for each other and we understand what we have been through cannot just disappear, but it's not like it was before."
Villas-Boas will also come up against several of the players he was in charge of at Chelsea on Saturday, including Spain midfielder Juan Mata, 25, who has been used sparingly by Mourinho this season.
The Spurs manager made an enquiry for Mata this summer but admits it is unlikely he will renew his interest when the transfer window reopens.
"When top players become available, when their situation changes at a club, and particularly for a player like Juan Mata, you enquire about the situation, but nothing went further than a simple enquiry," added the Spurs boss.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes Tottenham are a "big contender"

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes Tottenham are a "big contender"
for the Premier League title, claiming they are one of six possible
champions.
The Portuguese, 50, insists the title race is more open than
during his first spell as Blues boss between 2004-2007."Tottenham are a big contender. They have bought players with quality," he said ahead of Saturday's trip to Spurs.
"Six teams are competing for the position. Any one of the six teams can be first, any one can be sixth."
Mourinho joined Chelsea in June 2004 and led them to two Premier League titles in his first two seasons, with Manchester United lifting the trophy in his final season at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea and Manchester United were the only Premier League winners between 2005-2011, before Manchester City broke their dominance in 2012.
Mourinho's side go into Saturday's match fourth in the table, two points behind second-placed Tottenham.
"In my first time it was a clear race between Chelsea and Manchester United, two fantastic teams who were probably better than any team at this moment," he said.
"Finally, Man City broke that period of blue and red dominance. At the moment the situation is different.
"At this moment six teams are competing for the position, that is the beauty of the league. It is better like this."
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has also said six teams are challenging for the Premier League title, claiming Liverpool and Tottenham have joined Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea as realistic contenders.

Barcelona's Javier Mascherano out of Champions League
Barcelona's Javier Mascherano out of Champions League tie at Celtic
Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano will miss next week's Champions
League trip to Celtic as well as two league games with a hamstring
injury.
Medical tests on Wednesday confirmed the ex-West Ham and Liverpool player has strained his right hamstring.
"He will be sidelined for 10 to 15 days," said a Barcelona statement.
His absence leaves Barca coach Gerardo Martino with limited defensive options for Tuesday's tie against Celtic in Glasgow.
Left-back Jordi Alba is already out with a hamstring tear, while centre-back Carles Puyol continues to regain fitness after knee surgery in the summer.
Midfielder-turned-centre-back Mascherano has also been ruled out of La Liga matches at Almeria on 28 September and the visit of Valladolid on 5 October.
"These are Barca's last three games before the international break. There will be no more games after that until the trip to play Osasuna on 19 October," added the Barca statement.
Real referee mental state questioned: awarded Real Madrid the stoppage-time penalty
Real Madrid referee maybe 'not in right frame of mind'
The official that awarded Real Madrid the stoppage-time penalty that
enabled them to beat Elche 2-1 might not have been in the "right frame
of mind", according to Spain's referees' chief.
"I don't think he got it right," said Victoriano Sanchez Arminio. "Maybe he had some family issue that meant he wasn't in the right frame of mind."
The referees' chief added: "But there you go, sometimes we get it right and sometimes not, that's football.
"When someone is not on form on the pitch it's one thing after the other."
Replays seem to suggest that the Portugal defender had held the arm of the Elche player as both fell to the ground as a corner from the right was delivered into the area.
Elche full-back Edu Albacar said his side,
promoted to Spain's top flight last season, had been robbed of a point
after Richmond Boakye's 91st-minute header had cancelled out Ronaldo's
free-kick.
"The match has been stolen from us," said the defender.
"Anyone who watched the game can decide why Madrid won, it's very
clear."After the final whistle, Elche midfielder Carlos Sanchez had to be restrained by a team-mate as he tried to make his feelings known to the referee.
Real manager Carlo Ancelotti said he was "not happy" with the performance of his players.
"We suffered a lot, especially at the end. The team did not control the match after Ronaldo's goal," the former Chelsea boss said.
"The important thing is the result but it's not enough, we have to play better.
"Playing like that we will not win the derby - above all we have to play with more intensity and personality."
Meanwhile, Ancelotti told Barcelona's Gerard Pique to "focus on playing rather than talking" after the defender.
Real, who lie third in Spain's top flight, play Atletico Madrid on Saturday. Atletico, who along with Barca have won all of their opening six league games, are two points head of their city rivals.
Manchester United Coach Says: I will 'sort out' club
Manchester United manager David Moyes insisted he will be a success at the club after steering his side to a
League Cup win over Liverpool.
After beating Liverpool to earn a fourth-round tie with Norwich he said: "It's not frustrating. I will sort it.
"I will fix it. I will turn it round. I have no doubt about that."
Moyes saw his side lose to Liverpool and be thrashed 4-1 by rivals Manchester City in a difficult opening start to the Premier League, but has now won five of his first eight games in all competitions - the best start of any new United manager since Matt Busby in 1946.
"Everybody seems to be picking a stat out - I have not won here or I have not done that," former Everton boss Moyes said. "That is one of the good stats.
"I have not had that many good ones. But that is one of the better ones.
"It was a big game for us. We had lost at Anfield a few weeks ago and at the Etihad on Sunday and we wanted to put that right."
Javier Hernandez's goal was enough for Moyes' side to beat Liverpool at Old Trafford, with United hosting West Brom in the Premier League on Saturday.
"Every game is either a first for something or it is a monkey off my back. It is going to be the way, isn't it?" said Moyes.
"Liverpool have started the season well, so to get a result was good."
Mario Balotelli apologizes for ref abuse in the third person

received a three-match ban for insulting the referee as he was sent off at the end of Milan's 2-1 loss to Napoli. Balotelli missed a penalty for the first time in his career and scored in that match, but the official's refusal to punish Napoli for knocking him around throughout the game pushed him over the edge. And after his own manager said that he needs to stop acting like a child, Mario has decided to apologize. But not to everyone.
Balotelli recently asserted that he shouldn't be compared to former teammate and fellow supremely talented and endlessly entertaining striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but when he apologizes in teh third person it becomes all the more difficult to avoid comparisons. He tells La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Football Italia):
“First of all I am sorry for my teammates,” said Balotelli. “They train and work hard with me, so with this gesture I left them alone. I also feel guilty for the fans, who care so much, and of course the club.
“I apologise to the referee, as I should not have reacted that way. Against Napoli it was the same old story, the fouls against me don’t seem to count and as soon as I do anything... I just want others to be punished for fouling me the same way I am for fouling them. But I do realise I have to resist in certain situations.” [...]It's true that Mario hasn't killed anyone, so the outrage should be tempered by that fact. But a professional footballer referring to himself in the third person isn't usually viewed as much better.
“I made a mistake when I was provoked. Mario got it wrong and Mario apologises, but I don’t want to apologise to everyone because it’s not as if I killed someone,” added Balo, talking about himself in the third person.
Fulham's Michael Jackson King of Pop statue

A Statue Is Removed, and Fans Are Thrilled
LONDON — For decades, Michael Jackson was known for his elaborate entrances and glittery stage shows. On Wednesday, the King of Pop was hauled away in air-bubble packaging by four burly stonemasons.
It was an unceremonious end to his nearly three-year run at Fulham’s
stadium, Craven Cottage.
After 90 minutes of chiseling, sawing and hacking, Jackson left the
building, horizontally, on the back of a truck.
He will not be missed by Fulham fans. Since April 2011, a nearly
eight-foot statue of Jackson, made of Jesmonite, stood facing the
Thames, behind the home stands. A large sign that read “Michael Jackson
the Tribute” hung next to Jackson, who stood atop black granite with a
sequined jacket, an ammunition belt and a glove on his right hand.
His presence was incongruous in the extreme. Mohamed al-Fayed, the
team’s eccentric former owner, who called Jackson a friend, had the
statue built even though Jackson seemed to care little about soccer and
attended only one Fulham match.
Fulham’s fans were happy with Fayed, who spent lavishly to lift the
club’s fortunes. They helped pay for a tasteful and far more expensive bronze
statue of Johnny Haynes, perhaps the team’s greatest player, which
stands at the other end of the stadium.
While Jackson’s fans traveled from far and wide to pay their respects,
in the masculine world of English soccer, the homage to Jackson was
considered a joke.
“It’s rubbish,” said Andy Hunt, a longtime fan who stood near the statue
before Tuesday’s League
Cup game against Everton, drinking beer with his friend, Malcolm
Apted. “I don’t object to the person. If it was in bronze, maybe. But
it’s tacky.”
Fayed — who bought Fulham in 1997, a few months before his son, Dodi,
died in a car crash with Diana, Princess of Wales — was unrepentant.
When asked in 2011 about whether a statue of Jackson made sense at the
fabled stadium, he said, “If some stupid fans don’t understand or
appreciate such a gift, they can go to hell.” For good measure, he
invited these unbelievers to root for Chelsea, Fulham’s archrival, which
plays two subway stops away.
Fayed got his way until he sold Fulham in July to Shahid
Khan, the billionaire owner of the N.F.L.’s Jacksonville Jaguars. At
the news conference announcing the deal, Fayed threatened to cut off
Khan’s signature handlebar mustache if the statue were removed.
Two months later, Khan made perhaps the most important decision of his
young tenure as owner: Jacko would go. “Our supporters’ views on the
statue have been made clear,” he said in a statement last week. Removing
the statue, he said, was “the right thing for Fulham Football Club.”
The decision won Khan instant credibility with fans who were otherwise
unhappy with the team’s slow start this season.
For now, the statue of Jackson will remain in a warehouse while Fayed
decides its fate.
Martin Jol, Fulham’s manager, is considering bidding for the statue and
either auctioning it for charity or adding it to his art collection,
which includes nearly two dozen other statues and several hundred
paintings.
“It would be nice to keep it in the Fulham family, if he wants,” Jol
said, referring to Fayed.
Liverpool to Offer Suarez New Deal
The Uruguayan striker was determined to leave Anfield
during the transfer window, but the club's managing director says the
striker will be offered fresh terms next year
Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre says the club
will offer Luis Suarez a new contract at the end of the
season. The Uruguay international made no secret of his desire to leave Anfield over the summer, with Arsenal seeing two bids for the striker rejected, and Ayre recently claimed the player had damaged Liverpool’s brand.
Suarez returned to Brendan Rodgers' starting lineup for Wednesday’s Capital One Cup defeat to Manchester United after serving a 10-game ban and Ayre is determined to retain his services for the foreseeable future.
"We sort of begin those type of discussions two years in from the end, so it'll be the end of this season," Ayre told Sky Sports News.
"We'll do the same with everyone and at the right time we'll have the discussion with Luis and his advisers."
Rodgers accused Arsenal of "lacking class" after submitting a controversial 40,000,001 pound bid for the striker in the hope of triggering a supposed buy-out clause in his contract, but Ayre insists he holds no grudges against the Gunners or counterpart Ivan Gazidis.
"That's the transfer market," he continued. "I have huge respect for Arsenal, they're a great football club, with some great people. I'm good friends with Ivan. Trying to get players, making offers for players, it's all part of the game.
"Anyone who says it isn't and makes a big noise is not really being honest. Everybody does the same thing in football, everybody's trying to achieve the same thing, we're all trying our best to buy the best players for the best price."

Lionel Messi unhappy with 'media lies' after win
Lionel Messi has responded angrily to reports that he made a gesture
after being substituted in Barcelona's 4-1 win at home to Real Sociedad.
Madrid-based tabloid AS reported that Messi was unhappy with being replaced.
But Messi said: "I didn't mean to make any
gesture when I came off. I will not accept that certain media tell
lies."
Sergio Busquets scored Barcelona's third from 20 yards after Messi had hit the crossbar and Sociedad pulled one back when Alberto De La Bella tapped in.
Messi then beat three men to lay on the fourth for Marc Bartra before he was substituted for Sergi.
Messi later wrote on his Facebook page: "Nobody likes to be replaced, but we must accept it because it is the best for our team.
"What I will not accept is that certain media tell lies about any situation that happens around me."
Barcelona have won all six La Liga games but are only ahead of Atletico Madrid on goal difference after they held on to beat Osasuna 2-1.
Diego Costa scored twice for Atletico, who face Real Madrid on Saturday.
Real can close the gap on the top two when they face Elche on Wednesday.
Fulham inflict first defeat on Everton
Fulham won at home for the first time since April by punishing a
wasteful Everton in the Capital One Cup.
Barcelona loanee Deulofeu created several chances but Dimitar Berbatov equalised from close-range.
Substitute Darren Bent then collected a Giorgos Karagounis free-kick after 68 minutes and fired in to end Everton's unbeaten start to the season.
Victory for Martin Jol's side was their
third of the season and offers some relief for the Dutch manager, whose
team had lost five and drawn one of their previous six home games.
Roberto Martinez's first defeat as Everton boss looked
unlikely after his side dominated the first half and they took a
well-deserved lead through Naismith after 12 minutes.Romelu Lukaku and the excellent Deulofeu kept Everton on top, but they could not find a second despite a host of first-half opportunities.
Berbatov, who returned from injury, levelled with his first of the season nine minutes after the break.
And Bent then wrapped the win up in front of England manager Roy Hodgson less than three minutes after his introduction from the bench.
Only 10 days after some Fulham fans chanted "Jol out" following a 1-1 draw with West Brom, the home supporters cheered their team off at the end as Fulham reached the fourth round for the first time since 2004.

Theo Walcott: Arsenal winger to miss World Cup qualifiers
Arsenal forward Theo Walcott will miss England's World Cup qualifiers
against Montenegro and Poland as he will have abdominal surgery on
Wednesday.
"Theo will be out for a few weeks," said Gunners manager Arsene Wenger.
"He has developed some damage to his posterior abdominal wall. It's not a hernia, but it's a little structural problem in his abdomen."
England face Montenegro on 11 October, before completing their qualification group fixtures against Poland four days later.
Roy Hodgson's side need to win those two
qualifiers to guarantee qualification for Rio 2014.
Walcott, who scored his first goal of the season in
the 2-1 win
over Marseille in the Champions League last Wednesday,
was replaced in the starting line-up against Stoke by 18-year-old
German Serge Gnabry.
He has suffered with a similar injury before, having withdrawn from the England squad with a pelvic muscle problem in March and on that occasion was out for three weeks.
But Wenger was quick to brush away any major concerns, adding: "He will have the procedure in Germany on Wednesday and, because it's so minor, we can begin his rehab immediately.
"We are pleased it's being dealt with quickly and he shouldn't miss too many Arsenal matches. But he will miss the forthcoming international matches with England."
Tottenham thrash Aston Villa

Jermain Defoe scored twice as Tottenham
powered past Aston Villa and into the fourth round of the League Cup.
The England striker set Spurs on their way by glancing
home Lewis Holtby's clever pass before completing the victory with a
late finish.
Paulinho and Nacer Chadli were also on the scoresheet as Tottenham dominated.
However, Villa should have been awarded a
penalty early in the second half when Nicklas Helenius was impeded by
Jan Vertonghen.
However, much to the bemusement of Villa manager Paul Lambert, referee Jon Moss turned down the penalty appeals.
That might have given Villa a way back into a match which Tottenham dominated, despite manager Andre Villas-Boas's pre-match assertions that it would be a risk for his players to play so soon after Sunday's victory over Cardiff.
Only Vertonghen, Kyle Walker and Paulinho retained their places in the Spurs side as new boys Erik Lamela, a club record £25.7m signing from Roma, and Vlad Chiriches were given opportunities.
And Defoe, who has now scored six goals in his three first-team starts this season, relished the clever balls being played in behind the defence by Lamela.
Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer, making his second start of the season after a summer move from Norwich, kept his side in the game with a number of fine saves.
But he could do nothing about Defoe's opener at the end of the first half as the striker deftly headed home Holtby's cute clip over the defence.
Following Helenius's failure to win an early second-half penalty, Paulinho doubled Tottenham's lead when he lost his marker and poked in Holtby's corner at the near post.
Villa winger Aleksandar Tonev forced Brad Friedel into a save with a stinging 25-yard shot but Tottenham completed their convincing win as the hosts tired.
First Chadli latched on to a loose pass and rifled in at the near post before Defoe skipped around Steer to tap in his second of the night.
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert:
On Nicklas Helenius getting his shorts pulled down: "That was a big moment. It thought it was a pen. I don't think anybody could believe it. It was a strange decision.
"I didn't think there were four goals in that. We had a lot of players out injured and they were too much for us. But I couldn't fault the lads for effort.
"We gave it a go in the second half and their second goal was a really poor goal from our point of view.
"There are a couple of plus points from individual performances. Nathan Baker is coming back after injury. Marc Albrighton was excellent."
Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas:
"We've shown a great team spirit this year. The players are all buzzing for opportunities like this so most of them really performed tonight.
"We have great strength in depth so it allows us to throw such a strong team on the pitch after playing just two days ago.
"The best thing about this evening is that the players who came in responded well and respected the competition."

Swindon Town 0-2 Chelsea: Mata and Luiz back as Blues progress
Chelsea swept past Swindon Town to make it into the
fourth round of the Capital One Cup.
Juan Mata and David Luiz, who had notably been left out of the Blues lineup against Fulham on Saturday, were both involved in a 2-0 win at the County Ground.
Torres opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a poacher’s finish
after Mata saw his shot saved by Wes Foderingham. Ramires doubled the
lead soon after as he lifted a ball into the net following a neat pass
from Torres, who had wriggled free outside the area in expert fashion.
As well as the returns of Mata and Luiz, Jose Mourinho gave Mark Schwarzer his Chelsea debut in goal, Cesar Azpilicueta made his 50th club appearance, and Kevin De Bruyne and Willian started as well.
Swindon boss Mark Cooper made one change from the side victorious against Bristol City last time out, with Alex Pritchard replacing Louis Thompson in midfield.
Chelsea was forced into an early change when young Dutchman Van Ginkel twisted his knee after falling awkwardly, with the 20-year-old appearing to be in a lot of pain as he hobbled off in the 10th minute. After the injury and a tight opening to the game, Mourinho’s men had the first sight of goal midway through the half.
Mata threaded a neat ball into Torres's path, and the striker cut in front of his man but saw Foderingham make a save with his head to deny him. Minutes later, though, the former Liverpool man made no mistake as he broke the deadlock after neat build-up play between Ramires and Mata.
Mata’s shot was saved by Foderingham, but Torres was on hand to pounce on the loose ball and poke home from a matter of inches.
Torres then turned provider in the 35th minute as the visitors doubled the lead. The Spaniard played a perfectly weighted pass for Ramires to run onto inside the penalty area, leaving the Brazilian to calmly lift the ball over the advancing keeper and into the back of the net.
Danny N’Guessan thought he had halved the deficit for the hosts early in the second half when he met a Jay McEveley free kick and headed past Schwarzer, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Swindon provided more of an attacking threat after the break, but Schwarzer was rarely tested in the Chelsea goal.

success was tempered by the loss of Marco van Ginkel and Ramires to
injury.

European Football - Terim sacked by Galatasaray, Mancini favourite
Fatih Terim’s third spell as Galatasaray manager has come to a shock end after the club decided to part ways with him following a two hour meeting at the Turk Telekom Arena on Tuesday.
The Istanbul club said they had terminated Terim's contract after he declined to accept a proposed two-year extension to his term.
In a statement on its website, Galatasaray said "recent developments" had started to damage the club's "values", without elaborating. Turkish media have been reporting growing discord between Terim and the club's management.
"First and foremost, our board of directors are responsible for protecting these values and passing these on to future generations," the club said in the statement.
"As part of this responsibility, in order to prevent further deterioration of our community, our board of directors decided unanimously to notify Mr. Terim that his contract has been terminated," it said.
Terim had only recently begun his third stint at the helm of the Turkish national team after they departed with Abdullah Avci, but he was only expected to job-share until the end of their current World Cup campaign when his country would appoint a permanent successor.
The legendary Turkish manager leaves Galatasaray sitting in 11th place in the Super Lig, albeit with a game in hand after their clash with leaders Besiktas was abandoned after the pitch was invaded by dozens of fans.
Terim led Galatasaray to the Champions League quarter-finals last season, with major summer signings Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder playing an influential role, but last week they were thrashed 6-1 at home by Real Madrid in the same competition.
Roberto Mancini has emerged as the early front runner to fill the vacant managerial position with several Italian and Turkish sources claiming he's already in Istanbul for negotiations, according to Football Italia.
